The Weight of the First Embrace
I vividly remember holding my daughter for the first time. In that exact moment of pure joy, an uninvited sadness crept into my heart. I realized I would have to be extra careful simply because she was a girl.
As a woman born in 1989, I am no stranger to the everyday hyper-vigilance of growing up female in India. Yet, the level of fear embracing parents today is beyond anything we imagined decades ago. It is a suffocating panic fueled by a relentless cycle of horrific news, where new names of violated daughters constantly flash across our screens.
It breaks my heart that letting my daughter explore her potential feels like a terrifying gamble. We cannot claim we are an advancing nation while a woman’s independence is treated as a safety hazard.
The India I still choose to believe in must be one we actively fight to change. True progress must be measured by the absolute safety of a child and the uninterrupted freedom of women. I choose to believe in a future where her ambition is met with ironclad protection and total freedom.
