The Silence and The Storm: Chapter 2

Evelyne walked down the stairs into the main hall, wearing her worn blue dress. Trisha was already there, standing next to a huge pile of laundry—just another way to make Evelyne’s day harder.

“You start with the linens,” Trisha said, her voice sharp and bossy. “Every tablecloth, every napkin, every sheet from the last month’s guests.”

Why do they always give me the worst jobs? Evelyne thought, feeling the weight settle heavier on her shoulders. “I’ll get started.”

Elmira came into the hall, holding a sketch of a fancy dress. “Why do we even bother with her? She’ll never be one of us,” Trisha whispered, flicking a broom at Evelyne’s feet like she was nothing.

Elmira ignored the comment, her eyes bright with excitement. “Did you hear? The Prince of Swenders might be looking for a new companion at the grand ball.”

“A companion?” Trisha sneered. “He wants someone with status. What would he want with someone like her, for example?” She glanced at Evelyne with disgust.

I don’t care about their silly ball, Evelyne thought. That world of gold and fancy dresses isn’t for me.
