The Silence And The Storm: Chapter 16

“Run!”

Prince Arin’s voice cut through the chaos.

He reached for Evelyne’s hand, gripping it tightly as he pulled her toward one of the exits. Around them, the ballroom had dissolved into panic. Nobles who had arrived only moments ago wrapped in silk and glitter were now rushing in every direction, their expensive gowns and jeweled coats forgotten. Some stumbled over their own feet. Others pushed past one another, desperate to get away from the shadows that had swallowed the room.

The music had stopped.

The laughter had disappeared.

All that remained was the sound of frightened voices and hurried footsteps echoing against the marble floors.

Evelyne followed Arin for a few steps, her heart pounding hard against her chest.

But something was wrong.

She could feel it.

The Button.

It was growing warmer beneath her gown, its familiar hum becoming stronger and more urgent. The sensation spread through her palm and up her arm, almost as if the Button were trying to pull her in another direction.

She slowed.

Then she stopped.

Arin kept moving for another step before realizing she was no longer beside him.

“Evelyne?”

She looked down, her fingers pressing instinctively against the Button hidden beneath the folds of her dress.

The warmth had become almost impossible to ignore.

And suddenly, she understood.

Her wish.

Not the words she had spoken in the garden, but the meaning behind them.

She had thought she wanted to attend the ball. She had thought she wanted a chance to step outside the life she had always known, to see the palace, the nobles, the world beyond the manor.

But that wasn’t really what she had wanted.

Not completely.

She had wanted freedom.

She had wanted the chance to finally break away from the life that had kept her small and silent for so long. She had wanted to see the world without someone else telling her what it was supposed to look like.

She had wanted the truth.

And the Button had given it to her.

But now she understood something else, too.

Truth had consequences.

The Button had opened a door for her—but it had also drawn the attention of something darker. Something that had been waiting in the shadows long before she ever knew it existed.

Her gaze moved toward the ballroom.

The darkness seemed to shift there, almost alive.

Evelyne swallowed.

She couldn’t simply leave.

Not now.

Not after everything she had seen.

She shook her head and pulled her hand away from Arin’s grasp.

“No, wait!”

Arin immediately turned.

“What are you doing?”

Evelyne looked at him, her breathing uneven.

“We can’t just run,” she said. Her voice trembled, but she forced herself to keep going. “We need to stop this before it’s too late.”

For a moment, Arin simply stared at her.

The noise of the ballroom seemed to fade around them.

He could see the fear in her eyes. He could hear it in the slight shake of her voice.

But there was something else there, too.

Determination.

He had seen fear before.

He had seen it in the faces of soldiers standing before impossible battles, in nobles who had lost control of a situation, in people who suddenly realized that the world they thought they understood was not as safe as they believed.

But Evelyne was different.

She was afraid.

He could see that clearly.

And yet she was still standing there.

Still choosing to stay.

Arin’s expression softened, concern still present in his eyes, but something deeper joining it.

Admiration.

He had known Evelyne for only a short time.

Yet somehow, she had already shown him something that many people in the palace never had.

Courage wasn’t the absence of fear.

It was choosing to move forward while fear was still there.

And Evelyne had just made that choice.

She looked toward the shadows again, the Button pulsing beneath her fingers.

Whatever had begun tonight was no longer something she could ignore.

The storm had arrived.

And this time, Evelyne wasn’t going to run from it.
