The Silence And The Storm: Chapter 17

“Stop it?” Arin asked, his voice filled with disbelief. “How can we possibly stop this?”

He turned toward the ballroom, gesturing helplessly at the swirling darkness around them.

“These creatures… they’re invincible!”

As if to prove his words, one of the shadows suddenly twisted and stretched. What had been nothing more than smoke a moment ago began to take shape, gathering into a monstrous figure.

It was tall and gaunt, its form almost too dark to properly see. It moved with a strange, unnatural speed, raising one long shadowy claw toward the nearest window.

The claw struck.

The heavy velvet curtain tore apart with a violent rip, sending pieces of fabric fluttering across the floor.

Several nobles screamed.

Arin instinctively stepped back, his eyes fixed on the creature.

Evelyne didn’t move.

She could feel the fear inside her. It was there, beating alongside her racing heart.

But she didn’t let it control her.

She had spent years facing the Baroness.

Years of being ordered around, humiliated, ignored, and made to feel as though she was somehow less important than everyone around her. She had learned how to stand quietly while cruel words were thrown at her. She had learned how to keep going when every part of her wanted to disappear.

The Demon King was different.

He was darker.

More powerful.

More dangerous.

But perhaps he wasn’t as different as he seemed.

The Baroness had tried to make Evelyne believe she was powerless.

Now something far more terrifying was trying to do the same thing.

Evelyne looked down at the Button.

It was glowing brighter than ever.

The sapphire light pulsed beneath her fingers, steady and strangely familiar. Its energy seemed to move through her hand, almost like a quiet voice without words.

It was calling to her.

Not demanding.

Not forcing.

Urging.

Evelyne slowly closed her eyes.

For a moment, the chaos around her seemed distant.

She could still hear the frightened voices. She could still hear the creatures moving through the ballroom. She could still hear Arin breathing beside her.

But beneath all of it was something else.

The Button.

The same presence she had heard in the garden.

The voice that had warned her that nothing came without a price.

The voice that had asked her to be certain of her wish.

It was quieter now.

Almost a whisper.

But it was still there.

And somehow, Evelyne understood what it was trying to tell her.

Trust yourself.

She took a slow breath.

She had been waiting for someone to tell her what to do for most of her life.

The Baroness told her where to go.

Her stepsisters told her what work to finish.

The world around her had always seemed to decide what she could and couldn’t become.

But the Button hadn’t chosen her because she was the strongest person in the kingdom.

It hadn’t given her a sword.

It hadn’t given her an army.

It had given her a chance to see.

A chance to understand.

A chance to choose.

Evelyne opened her eyes.

The sapphire light reflected in them.

The Button wasn’t a sword.

It wasn’t meant to be a weapon she could simply raise against the darkness.

It was a key.

A key to something that had been inside her all along.

Her courage.

Her strength.

Her ability to choose what she would become.

Evelyne tightened her fingers around it.

For the first time, she didn’t feel like the Button was carrying her toward the truth.

She felt like she was ready to walk toward it herself.
