The Silence and the Storm: Chapter 18
Evelyne opened her eyes.
The fear was still there, but something had changed.
She met Arin’s gaze, and this time, there was no hesitation in her expression. The uncertainty that had held her back was fading, replaced by something stronger.
Resolve.
“The Demon King,” she said.
The realization came suddenly, almost like a piece of a puzzle finally falling into place.
“He wants this.”
Arin frowned. “What do you mean?”
Evelyne glanced around the ballroom.
The nobles were still running.
Some were rushing toward the exits. Others were calling out for family members, servants, guards—anyone who might help them. A few had already abandoned those around them, choosing their own safety over everyone else’s.
The court that had been filled with laughter and music only moments ago was now scattered and divided.
“They’re doing exactly what he wants,” Evelyne said.
Arin followed her gaze.
“He wants to create chaos,” she continued. “He wants everyone to turn against each other. To break down their trust. Their unity.”
Her fingers tightened around the Button.
“Look at them.”
Arin watched silently.
“They’re running,” Evelyne said. “They’re abandoning each other. Everyone is afraid, and no one knows who they can trust.”
She looked back at him.
“That is his strength.”
For a moment, Arin said nothing.
Then he slowly nodded.
The panic in his expression began to give way to something familiar.
His mind.
The part of him that had spent years studying the kingdom, watching its weaknesses, understanding its politics, and thinking several steps ahead began to take control.
He looked around the ballroom again.
Evelyne was right.
The Demon King hadn’t needed to defeat the court himself.
The fear had done most of the work.
“And you think you can defeat him?” Arin asked.
His gaze dropped to the Button.
“With that… button?”
There was disbelief in his voice, but not mockery.
Evelyne almost smiled.
“Not alone.”
She looked at the glowing sapphire light between her fingers.
Then she looked at Arin.
“But together, we can.”
Her voice was quiet.
Certain.
“Trust me.”
The words hung between them.
For a moment, Arin hesitated.
He had seen strange things tonight. More than he could explain.
The girl standing before him was still the same person he had met only moments ago—a scullery maid from a life he knew almost nothing about.
Yet she was dressed in impossible sapphire silks, standing in the middle of a ruined ballroom, holding an object that seemed to contain a power he couldn’t understand.
None of it made sense.
And yet…
He looked into her eyes.
There was no deception there.
No attempt to impress him.
No carefully chosen expression designed to win his approval.
Just truth.
The very thing he had spent years searching for.
Something in Evelyne’s voice made him believe her.
Maybe it wasn’t the Button he was supposed to trust.
Maybe the Button was only helping her reveal something that had already been inside her.
Courage.
Strength.
Conviction.
The Button was a focus.
The power was hers.
Arin straightened.
“Then we do this together.”
Evelyne nodded.
Neither of them knew exactly what they were about to face.
But neither stepped away.
They turned toward the ballroom once more.
The sight waiting for them was enough to make even Arin’s expression tighten.
The Demon King’s minions had spread throughout the room.
Dark shapes crawled along the walls and gathered beneath the towering windows, their smoky forms shifting restlessly in the shadows. Their eyes glowed with a cold, malevolent light as they slowly surrounded the remaining nobles.
The ballroom had become almost unrecognizable.
The chandeliers still hung overhead, but their golden light seemed weaker now.
The marble floor was scattered with torn fabric and fallen decorations.
The music had long since stopped.
And somewhere beyond the shadows, the Demon King was watching.
Evelyne took a breath.
The Button pulsed warmly in her hand.
Arin stood beside her.
For once, she wasn’t facing the darkness alone.
And together, they turned to face the storm.
