The Silence and The Storm: Chapter 6
Evelyne sat back on her knees, still staring at the strange button in her hand. The warmth from it hadn’t faded. If anything, it was spreading through her chest like a quiet fire. Not hot. Not painful. Just… full. Like it knew something she didn’t.
Then, just as she started to stand up, a deep voice echoed inside her head. It didn’t sound like it came from any direction—not the sky, not the trees. It was like it came from the ground itself.
“You have found me,” the voice said, deep and steady. “And now, I will give you what you desire most.”
Evelyne froze. Her fingers tightened around the button.
Wait… what?
She looked around quickly. No one was there. Just her, the herbs, and the birdsong.
Am I imagining this? Is this some kind of trick?
But the voice continued, slower now. Heavier.
“But know this: nothing comes without cost. I offer no gift without a price. Be certain of your wish.”
Then, silence. The warmth faded a little, but the button still buzzed faintly in her palm.
Evelyne looked down at it, feeling a mix of fear and wonder.
What would I even wish for? she thought. To leave? To be free? To be seen for who I really am?
She stood there for a while, the cool breeze brushing against her face, the button still quietly humming in her hand. She didn’t make a wish yet.
Not yet.
