One green colour georgette saree

Batch of engineering students telling horror stories to each other while travelling on a train trip.

Divya: Hey, let me start now. Enough of your bloodletting impractical horror stories. Now it is my turn to go through a spine-chilling occurrence and you all tell me what do you think about it? Was it a co-incident or an actual ghostly event?

So, back in year of 2002 my mom bought a classy, goody Saree. That kind of saree which a middle-class women get for marriage or big parties. A green colour Georgette saree. We were attracted to see her in that, but she waited for a big event to take it out of the wardrobe and that big event was a reception party in my aunt’s in-law’s home. That very day my road accident happened. A drunk scooter driver did not notice a small girl crossing the road and wounded her badly. Well, I survived.

Second time in year 2003 when my mum wore that Saree, it was my cousin’s wedding. And a murder happened, my uncle’s friend shot dead in the wedding and whole city was curfewed that night.

Third time when some function was going to occur, my mum refused to wear that saree, but my dad insisted that there is nothing wrong with that saree and my mum is overreacting. But to console her he suggested to go to temple first then attend the function. When they reach the wedding, it was my dad’s colleague’s daughter wedding and whole food wrecked by gang of mouse. Half of the wedding food ruined, and the groom party was on the entrance. Uncle folded his hands in front of his side of relative and guest and remorsefully suggested that he will not be able to offer any food other than the groom’s family. Everyone considered his request, and they attended the wedding without taking any food and water. My parents reach home at 1 am without any food.

Next morning my mum took the saree and hung it in her wardrobe untouched for many upcoming gathering and parties. Suddenly in 2004 we got to know that my mum has Gall bladder stone. On the day, my mom was going to operate my elder sister took her Saree and put it in the Chest out of ire. Saying that it ill-fated. Until next 2-3 years our family went through a lot. My dad had transferred to bad cities, mum had another operation due to infection because of first operation. There was lot of financial crunches. Our whole family scattered.

After few years we alleviate a bit. In year 2006 we got ready for my maternal uncle’s wedding and my mum took out that saree from trunk and took it with her. When my newly married auntie saw that saree, she showed her interest in it by saying that she does not have a saree like this. My mum took the saree and presented to her while saying that it will suit her. After few months, my aunt met an accident, and she got a rod placed in her left leg.

Divya: So, now you tell me what was that?

Abhishek from the group: Saree was haunted.                                                                                                            Tanya: No way, there is nothing in this world like haunted. It is just that some unhappy event happened around that Saree.                                                                                                                                                                 Manav: yes, I agree with Tanya, but this sounds creepy, horror story. I mean events which make you think for hours.

Divya: Relax, there is more to it. I was only telling you half of the story.                                                         Saurav: What? Then what is the other half? I am already shaking.

Divya: What if I say that saree was not alone?                                                                                                                My mum’s twin sister bought the same saree from same place at same time. Hers was pink colour. First time when she wore it my accident happened. Second time when she wore it was a karwachauth festival (Indian festival) she got full body allergy. When she heard that my sister put it in the chest, she did the same and after my newly married maternal aunt accident happened, she diagnosed with breast cancer.

We all gathered to meet her before her operation. And we went through all the events which happened around that saree worn or not worn in both families. My cousin distressed and livid took out that saree from his mother’s trunk. He took my uncle on motorcycle and went to his home to pick the green saree which my mom gifted to my maternal aunt. Both sarees with him he went to the shopkeeper from where my mum and aunt took it. He threw both the sarees in front of the shopkeeper and asked about it whereabouts without revealing any events associated with it.

Shopkeepers identify that saree and recall the day when it first came to his shop.

Shopkeeper: These sarees came to my shop on 11 Nov 2002. Unique design, vibrant and beautiful patters. Truly a one of a kind. So, I put them aside for my twin sisters for their birthday. I called them to pick it up from my shop. But they were not able to make it in time.                                                                      I got a call from home at 12 o clock that my sisters have met an accident. I kept those sarees at my desk and rushed to the hospital. Your mom and her sister must buy these in my absence. There was a new employee on that day who must have not taken attention to the fact that I kept it aside for my sisters.

Cousin: Ah, okay no problem. Well Destiny, you kept it aside for your twin sisters. But it reached to other twin sisters. How were your sisters. Hope they are doing good now.

Shopkeeper after a pause: They passed away on that day, on their birthday. The call I got was that they have met an accident, truck hit them from behind while they were reaching the shop for picking the sarees. They died on the spot. When I reached Hospital, they were already dead. And as a part of family ritual, we cremate our unmarried daughters in wedding outfits. So, I decided to bid farewell in those sarees which I kept aside. But when I reached shop, those sarees were gone. It came to your home with your mum and aunt.

Divya: After hearing this my brother distressed and petrified and he took the matches from the shop and ablaze both Sarees in fire.

We discussed a lot of things until my aunt’s operation took place. Finally, she came out unharmed. She was recovering better but we still talk about the Sarees and the incidents which happened around it.
