Beyond gifts and flowers: What do moms really want on ‘Mother’s Day’?

-EJ

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother never did. A mother is something absolutely new – Rajneesh.

As Mother’s Day is round the corner, we are all scrambling for gifts, searching to give the best to our moms. Mother’s Day is, of course, special! In fact, the only day on which we all appreciate motherhood. But have we ever stopped to think what our moms really want on Mother’s Day? Is it just the gifts, or is there something more than that? Let’s explore what our moms truly need!

A mother is an embodiment of true love and beauty. She carries a rare blend of grace. Her dedication knows no limits, and her love forever emits. For a soul like her, no material gifts can stand equal to her. She deserves invaluable and priceless gifts not only on Mother’s Day but throughout her life. Giving her a lifetime of happiness instead of a momentary joy is what truly matters to her.

The author Oscar Wilde rightly said, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” We need not buy expensive gifts to make our moms happy. Just a small act of kindness, a little appreciation each day, will make her day. We never appreciate our mothers for all that they do until we grow up and face the world.

A mother does everything she can to provide the best for her family and home. She would try different recipes to make her children eat. Seeing her family eating together happily is what she loves the most. If she makes a new dish or if she thinks she has cooked well, she would stand by her husband and children, looking at them with eager eyes, carefully watching them swallow the food, waiting for a small gesture of appreciation or contentment.

Have we ever told our moms, “The food is delicious, I love it, thank you, Mom”?

Even if we just hum “Mmmm” it will brighten up her face. She deserves a small token of appreciation for all the efforts she puts in for us.

Gratitude goes beyond mere recognition. It is the feeling of being thankful for the things that make our lives better. A mother not only makes our lives better, but also she brings out the best in us. When we express gratitude for our mothers, we don’t just say thank you for what they have done, but we thank them for who they are—pillars of strength for the family, caretakers of the house, and beacons of love.

A gentle hug in the morning before we go out or at night before we sleep are small acts of gratitude that we show to our moms, making her feel loved.

“Time spent with family is time well spent.” Spending quality time with Mom is a precious gift that strengthens bonds and creates lasting memories. It shows that we value and appreciate our mom’s presence in our lives.

It could just be sharing a meal or having a heartfelt conversation; it’s a chance to fill her heart with joy and love, assuring her we are there for her. A mom spends more than half of her day on her family—from waking up early, preparing food, getting children ready for schools and colleges, managing her schedules or doing household chores, balancing her work and family life, going to bed after everyone, and still taking time to ask if we had eaten or if we need anything. But have we ever spared a minute to ask our moms how they are? If not, let’s dedicate some time from our lives to talk to our moms, who dedicated their whole lives to us.

Moms often juggle multiple responsibilities. Helping her with household chores and child care will be a huge support and give her relief. Even if we need water to drink or to find our belongings, we call for our mom’s help. But as a one and only woman, she manages all her duties. Lending a hand can go a long way in reducing her stress and workload and can make a big difference in bringing a smile to her face. Giving her a day off—weekly or monthly—will give her peace from all the chaos she’s been going through. After all, we all need rest, and so do our mothers, who work tirelessly and endlessly for us.

Sometimes, all a mom needs is someone to listen to her without judgment and interruption, allowing her to feel heard and understood. Moms often bear the brunt of family problems. They get scolded in the commotion that goes inside the family. They are prone to be prey for others’ anger. They rarely have someone to listen patiently to their side of the story. Let’s try to ‘pause,’ ‘think,’ ‘react,’ and ‘listen’ to our moms’ needs despite our hectic schedule and urgent needs.

Acknowledging the sacrifices of moms and celebrating their interests are warm ways of showing that their happiness and well-being matter as much as their family. Let’s reiterate the times our moms gave their food because we were hungry, the times they left uneaten because there wasn’t enough food for the surprise guests, and the times they had never bought anything for themselves.

Some moms sacrificed their careers to look after their families, while some others sacrificed their personal time to work tirelessly to earn for their families. Either of them is left only with mere societal judgments and criticisms. How can someone be so selfless? Don’t they deserve to be loved?

Honoring their interests and passions, standing by their side, and acknowledging their hard work, dedication, and sacrifices are the best gifts a mother can receive.

In conclusion, Mother’s Day isn’t just about bouquets and boxed presents. It’s about acknowledging the silent sacrifices, tireless efforts, and unconditional love that mothers give every day. While material gifts bring joy, what mothers truly long for, is genuine appreciation, quality time, kind words, and heartfelt gestures. Let’s remember, the best gifts we can give our moms are our presence, attention, and unconditional love – just like they’ve always shown us. Ultimately, Mother’s Day isn’t a one-day celebration, but a reminder to cherish and honor motherhood for eternity!
