Populations ruled: Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians, Albanians, Romanians, Hungarians (white groups)

Treatment

  • People paid extra taxes if they were Christian.
  • Local laws and customs were allowed, but under Ottoman authority.
  • Boys were sometimes taken through the devshirme system to serve in the Janissary military.

Communities had to follow Ottoman courts on major issues.
