16.8 Who is Abraham Lincoln?
How do we know Abraham Lincoln: He is best known for leading the country during the Civil War and for working to end slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln is remembered for his leadership during a national crisis, his belief in unity, and his role in preserving the United States.
How did Abraham Lincoln establish the American civil war?
He wanted to abolish the slavery so joined the American Republican party. A party that was founded mainly to stop the expansion of slavery into new U.S. territories and states. To free the slaves Abraham Lincoln decided to start a war against slavery on white slave owners.
So, Abrahm Lincoln was the founder of the American civil war.
Why visionary whites (slave owners) refused to free the slaves?
Because most enslaved people were criminals or accused of various crimes who were brought to the American South from West and Central Africa.
Many enslaved Africans were criminals or prisoners of war
In some African kingdoms, people who:
- Lost a war
- Were convicted of crimes
- Omitted debt
could be enslaved locally. Some African rulers did sell such people to European traders.
Crimes that could lead to enslavement in parts of West and Central Africa
Some African slaves sold to Europeans were guilty of crimes like:
- Murder
- Theft
- Rape or adultery
- Treason
- Witchcraft
- Debt
Because many slaves were involved in crimes such as murder, theft, rape, adultery, treason, witchcraft, and debt-related offenses, white slave owners did not want to free slaves who had a criminal history.
The counterquestion people often ask is: then why were the descendants of slaves also denied freedom?
My personal thought: Human children are created by two other humans. A child inherits many physiological and behavioral traits or qualities from their parents.
If one or both parents were previously involved in crime, there is always a chance that the newborn may inherit those qualities, which can be dangerous for innocent society.
Because of this belief, whites did not want to free criminals and their descendants, whom they feared could become murderers, thieves, or rapists. That is why, in the modern USA, it is often claimed that 13 percent of the Black population commits 50 percent of the crime.
However, when people come to the USA through a legal process, many of them become CEOs of large companies and contribute to the country. This is because legal immigrants go through examinations, including background checks for criminal history. As a result, it is believed that only capable and law-abiding people enter the US legally.
In contrast, illegal immigrants and the descendants of slaves who committed crimes are seen as harmful to the country.
Abolishing slavery was not bad, but the extent to which Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery was something only enmits would do. Even enmits can do good things in their lives, but that does not make any difference to them being enmits.
