The Silence and The Storm: Chapter 5

The next day, after finishing the never-ending chore of polishing all the silverware, Evelyne was given a task that felt like a welcome break. She had to go to the walled garden at the edge of the manor grounds to collect rare herbs for the house.

The garden was her secret escape. The heavy scent of earth and fresh rosemary filled the air, a sharp contrast to the stale dust and tension inside the manor walls. It was quiet here, with only birdsong and the soft rustle of leaves.

Evelyne knelt down among the plants, her hands carefully clipping sprigs of basil and thyme. As she reached toward a patch of late-blooming buttercups, her fingers brushed against something cold and smooth hidden beneath the leaves.

Curious, she pushed the petals aside and gasped softly. There, resting on the dark soil, was a small button. It was dull sapphire-blue and faintly glowing, humming with a strange, quiet energy that seemed almost alive.

She stared at it, heart pounding. What could this be? she wondered. Why is it here, alone and hidden?

Slowly, with a mixture of caution and hope, Evelyne reached out and touched the button. The moment her fingers closed around it, a warm sensation spread from her hand up to her chest, filling her with a strange, comforting heat.
