The Silence and The Storm: Chapter 7
Evelyne sat alone in the garden long after the chores were finished. The sky was turning orange as the sun began to set, and the wind made the tall grass dance softly. The button rested in her palm, no longer glowing, but still warm — like it was waiting for something.
She had been thinking about what the voice said. Over and over.
What do I want most?
At first, it had been easy to imagine something big. A gown. A new life. A chance to escape the Baroness forever. Maybe even someone to come and rescue her — like in the old stories Mae used to whisper by the kitchen fire.
But as the light faded and the stars began to show, Evelyne began to understand something deeper.
It’s not just about leaving, she thought. It’s about knowing. I want to see the world for what it really is. I want to stop guessing. Stop being kept in the dark.
She looked down at the button, thinking of the palace, the ball, and the people who walked through life like they owned the world.
I want to face them. Not as a servant. Not as someone small. Just as myself, with eyes wide open.
She didn’t say the wish yet. But her heart was clear now.
Her desire wasn’t to be admired. It wasn’t to be rich.
It was to understand the truth — and to be strong enough to carry it.
