Development and Conservation: A False Dichotomy
A common misconception is that environmental protection is opposed to economic development. In reality, environmental degradation itself creates enormous economic costs through health problems, crop losses, disasters and loss of livelihoods.
The way forward is sustainable development, which seeks to balance economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. Renewable energy, circular economy practices, sustainable agriculture, efficient public transport and green technologies can help achieve this balance.
The principle of “polluter pays”, environmental impact assessment, ecosystem restoration and responsible corporate behaviour should form part of a comprehensive conservation strategy.
The Role of Citizens
Nature conservation begins with individual and community action. Citizens can reduce waste, avoid single-use plastics, conserve water and electricity, plant and protect native trees, use public transport and adopt sustainable consumption habits.
However, individual responsibility must be supported by strong institutions and effective public policy.
