The deadly side of Mother Nature
School was closed for St. Patrick’s Day from March 8. Skye usually loved this time of the year because she would spend her time leisurely away from homeworks and hetic lessons. It was a pleasant evening in the prairie. The Sun had set over the prairie, creating a beautiful scene. Skye gazed out from the window, completely awestruck by what she saw. The house was in full holiday mode. Papa was relaxing in the hall, watching TV. Suddenly, a weather report appeared on the screen, announcing that a thunderstorm would hit at exactly 10 p.m. Skye shuddered when she overheard the news on the TV from her room. She hated thunderstorms, with thunder booming loudly across the sky and lightning striking the ground dangerously. The family made frantic preparations for facing the upcoming storm, stocking safety materials, blankets and necessary essentials. As the time approached, strong winds started howling and ink black clouds loomed over the horizon. The storm had arrived. Skye immediately scurried to her room as she frantically closed the windows and drew the curtains. She had dragged Chris along to her room. The duo jumped on the soft and cosy matteress and huddled themselves with blankets. Papa and Mom kissed them goodnight as they tucked them in the bed. Skye shuddered as she heard the booming of thunder and lightning flashed, creating gloomy shadows over the dark room. She eventually fell asleep, hoping that the nightmare will end soon. Outside in the prairie, rain was heavily pouring down. Strangely enough there was also a full moon. A tall, shadowy figure came galloping, desperately calling for help. It was a wild-spirited black mare, caught in the middle of a thunderstorm as lightning flashed dangerously close, narrowly missing her. Rain soaked every inch of her black coat. The mare collapsed near Skye’s house out of exhausation.
