RARE EARTH ELEMENTS (REE) AVAILABLE IN INDIA AND SURROUNDING COUNTRIES
Permanent magnets are essential to modern technology, powering smartphones, electronics, medical devices, and defence systems. Their production depends on rare earth elements (REE), making these resources increasingly important for technological and industrial development.
India possesses significant reserves of rare earth oxides (REO) in its beach sands and hard-rock deposits, particularly in minerals such as monazite and xenotime. Although the country has limited heavy REEs, it ranks among the world’s leading holders of REO reserves. This book examines the scientific and technical foundations required for the exploration, mining, beneficiation, hydrometallurgy, and powder metallurgy involved in rare earth production.
The book also discusses the strategic importance of recovering rare earth elements together with thorium and uranium while minimizing radioactive tailings for long-term environmental and national benefit. It further highlights the role of thorium in India’s Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) and its contribution to the country’s future energy programme.
Drawing on more than fifty years of professional experience, the author presents a comprehensive overview of India’s rare earth resources, their technological significance, and their role in strengthening the nation’s resource base and technological independence.

Was a Guide to a colleague for award of Ph.D. by Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
