A man in his forties comes to therapy and talks for twenty minutes about his mother before he can say why he is there. A woman holds her breath every time the lift doors close. A daughter has carried her mother’s headache for thirty years, and keeps the tablets in her handbag to prove it.
None of them has come to say what is wrong. Each has come, without knowing it, to find out whether it can be said at all.
For more than three decades Dr G. B. Singh has sat in one room while ordinary Indian lives—the good son, the arranged wife, the child told that one slap never hurt anyone—arrived at the single door their families could not follow them through. The Unspoken takes the reader inside that room: seventeen cases, told with the intimacy of a novel, of marriages that disappeared politely, women who lived two lives, men who made tea for no one, and silences handed from father to son like property.
Beneath the seventeen stories lie sixteen wounds—love earned by obedience, a self never permitted to form, the truth only the body kept, the room inside the mother—and none of them is rare. They are the inheritance of a country that taught its children to endure quietly and called the enduring strength. The reader will know which is theirs.
This is not a book that tells you how to live. It offers no steps and promises no cure. It does something rarer: it says the thing, plainly and without verdict, and stays in the room until you can say it too.
‘I have sat with this six hundred times. You are not alone, and it is not what you think.’
