Thinking of publishing a book?
One of the first questions authors ask is — what is an ISBN and do I need one to publish my book? Here’s a clear, experience-based guide to help you understand what an ISBN is, why it matters, and how to get one in India.
What is an ISBN?
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique 13-digit code assigned to every published book edition and format.
It helps booksellers, libraries, and online retailers identify and manage your book efficiently for ordering, cataloguing, and sales tracking.
If your book is available in any of the three formats — paperback, hardcover, and eBook — each format will need its own ISBN.
Why is an ISBN Important?
An ISBN is essential if you want your book to be:
- Listed on platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Google Books
- Distributed through bookstores and libraries
- Professionally recognized and trackable
Without an ISBN, your book cannot be distributed or catalogued by most retailers and libraries.
Is ISBN Mandatory in India?
An ISBN is not legally mandatory, but highly recommended.
Without it, your book won’t appear in official catalogues or searchable databases, limiting its reach and visibility.
Do eBooks Need an ISBN?
While it is optional, an ISBN for eBooks is strongly advised.
It improves discoverability across platforms like Kindle and Google Play Books and helps track sales accurately.

- On the copyright page inside the book

How to Get an ISBN in India — Step by Step
Getting an ISBN in India is straightforward once you know the process. There are two routes, depending on whether you are self-publishing independently or publishing through a company like Zorba Books.
Route A — Through Your Publisher (Recommended for most authors)
If you are publishing with Zorba Books, we handle your ISBN registration on your behalf as part of every publishing package. Your ISBN is registered under your name and book title and remains yours permanently. You do not need to apply separately or navigate any government portals. This is by far the simplest route and the one most Indian authors use.
Route B — Applying Directly Through Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN
If you are self-publishing entirely independently, you can apply for a free ISBN through India’s official ISBN agency. Here is the step-by-step process:
Step 1 — Visit the official ISBN India portal
Go to Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN — this is the only official government portal for ISBN registration in India. Do not use any third-party paid services, as ISBNs are free through this official channel.
Step 2 — Register as a publisher
First-time applicants must register as a publisher, even if you are a self-publishing individual author. Fill in your name, address, contact details, and the type of books you intend to publish. Individual authors can register under their own name.
Step 3 — Submit your application
After registration is approved (typically within 3 to 7 working days), log in and apply for an ISBN for your specific book. You will need to provide the book title, language, format (paperback, hardcover, or eBook), approximate page count, and subject category.
Step 4 — Receive your ISBN
Once your application is processed — usually within 7 to 14 working days — your ISBN is assigned and emailed to you. You can then use this number on your book’s copyright page, back cover barcode, and when listing on Amazon or Flipkart.
Step 5 — Generate your barcode
An ISBN alone is not enough for a print book — you also need a scannable barcode. Use a free barcode generator (search “ISBN barcode generator free”) to create the EAN-13 barcode image, which your designer then places on the back cover of your book.
Important things to know:
- Each format of your book (paperback, hardcover, eBook) needs a separate ISBN
- If you significantly revise your book after publication, the new edition needs a new ISBN
ISBNs issued to you are yours permanently — they cannot be transferred or reused for a different book
Quick Facts About ISBN
