The
Story
Begins!!!!
This is a story about a girl named Rosella and how she blooms in her life against the thorns of “Patriarchy”.
Around 18th Century, Rosella lived in the town of Ale with a joint family. She had 7 brothers and she was the youngest of all. This was the time when Patriarchy was at its peak.
Ale is a small yet vibrant town located in Northern Meik Islands. Green & bushy plains with extensive commercial grain cultivation is the region’s main source of employment. It’s working population consists of 100% men and not a single woman is allowed to work. However, it’s sex ratio is 2nd largest in the entire island region. With 102 females per 100 males. Ale has been in constant headline due to its women protesting against patriarchy and later in the story, you’ll discover who’s the one initiating it……
Patriarchy refers to a social system that gives power and control to men rather than women. Females were nor allowed to work outside. They were deprived of education and Girls were expected to obey their male counterparts without questioning. The world engineered in females, a tendency of being fragile and dependent. To be the PUPPET in the hands of a man.
Such were the conditions prevailing in Rosella’s family as well. “If a girl goes to study, she’ll grow out of our control.” This is what her father, brothers and uncles believed.
Women and Girls were expected to master the art of cooking and caretaking. All her aunts, her mother and her grandma too sacrificed their dreams. Her mother aspired to be a cook and represent the diverse culture of their cook. She really wished Rosella to be carrying on her dreams.
Rosella fell in love with cooking. She broadened her culinary range by learning to cook a variety of dishes.
Throughout her childhood, she was deprived of her education but she gathered her knowledge about the world while practicing the age old skills of cooking, painting and music.
By the way, Rosella belonged to one of the affluent families of her town. So, patriarchy is wide-ranging and knows no bounds.
Her life was full of herbs, spices, musical notes, colours, canvas and paint brushes. Growing up, she never liked the idea of being denied of opportunities just because she was a girl.
There was one thing that she learnt:
My wings would spread only in the endless sky and not in a cage…..
So, at age 17, she mustered up her courage and ESCAPED. The females of her family were the ones helping her.
She went to another town which was miles away from hers named JOILA.
Joila is another beautiful town located on the southernmost tip of Southern Meik Islands with rolling hills and majestic mountains along with green bushy plains. It had a dense population engaged in a range of occupations like finance, defence, drama, etc. The best part of this town is it’s sex ratio. For every 100 males, there were 110 females.
Rosella, a young girl of 17 initially felt insecure and lonely. But she was hosted by a group of empowered girls. She grew with them and realised that it’s her time to bloom.
On the other end, her family back in Ale, specifically it’s male population considered her as a disgrace to their family image.
Rosella met a really good man for the first time in her life who understood her goals. His name was Paull Sarinne. He was an expert in culinary arts and music. Paull was her neighbour who took up the role of her mentor and refined her skills in cooking and music.
After 3 years of training, Rosella was more mature and capable of justifying the skills she learnt as a child.
She participated in shows like “Taste of Joila” , “Joilaise Melodies” and so on.
Looks like her training brought out the best out of her……
She won the 3rd season of “Taste of Joila” and 7th season of “Joilaise Melodies”.
Alongside this, she never left painting and presented her drawings in many exhibitions representing Alese culture.
My words might put you in a speed run situation but Rosella’s life took time to transform.
Another lesson she learnt was that:
If 99 bad things exist, that 1 good thing exists as well…..
However, this story still had a thorn coming up.
Rosella had became a household name in entire of her own town, Joila and worldwide. She was so happy to fulfil her mother’s wishes and also being able to make her own identity. She was extremely grateful of her teacher, “Mr. Paull”.
One day, she was returning to her hometown when some men of her town had attacked her with acid and also tried to kill her. But, by then Rosella had perfected as a “yellow belt” in taekwondo and Karate. Of course, a girl can be delicate and fierce at the same time.
Also, her father, her brothers and her uncles who considered her to be the “disgrace” , were available at her help. Together, they caught the goons and goth them arrested.
It was no less than a festival when Fioma, Rosella’s mother saw her child after a very long period of time. She grew teary and hugged her like forever. Her aunts and her grandma were so proud of her as well.
For them, Rosella became a symbol of independence and individuality. Many ladies and Girls of her town considered her to be their role model. Also, the men of the “Ale” and worldwide grew ashamed of their narrow attitudes and conservative thinking.
Rosella Razzo and her entire family got together and opened up “A Holistic School” where girls are exclusively given education and are trained in various skills.
However, this noble initiative was crushed by the Central Meik Government. They termed it to be the “waste of money” and “unnecessary”.
Of course, you can guess it right, not a single woman held any ministry in this government. After a long time, women empowerment in the male dominated region of Ale started to equalise.
Rosella and her female squad tried to appeal to the conscience of the conservatives. But they are “conservatives” for a reason. Rosella tried the mediums of art and culture to engineer a sustainable gender practice in the region.
Now you might think this was only impacting the Island region. But it’s an incorrect guess. The Global context of GENDER EQUALITY was on the path of reform.
The girls of Ale got popular support from all over the world. It was like a grave problem connected all those togetherness who never knew each other previously.
It was the time to continue the PROTEST by appealing in the HOFRD (Higher Office of Female Rights and Duties).
Lexi Thurston, chief of HOFRD, was keen to make her career entirely dedicated Towards betterment of women even more grounded by helping Rosella in this noble cause.
Lexi suffered from a difficult childhood just because she was a girl. Her father wanted a boy and divorced her mom the second she was born. She has seen her mom struggling to be the bread earner for Lexi. From here on, Lexi decided to study. She had this golden opportunity just because she belonged to Seikoe, a neighbouring town of Joila.
However, unlike Rosella, Lexi was a bit radical and believed in changing the world by some violent and extreme actions.
Rosella and Lexi were like the opposite poles of a magnet. They bonded together to defeat the patriarchy of the Meik regime.
Lexi had some really important contacts that lit a spark in their ordinary movement.
They portrayed “freedom to the females” as an essential feature of a democratic framework and those who didn’t follow that shouldn’t be allowed to be the people’s Representative.
Well this political angle severely threatened those who did not want to lose the power.
After 2 gigantic years of popular protest, the Meik Government grew shameful and added “freedom to the females” to their constitution.
They also initiated and funded the RL foundation (Rosella-Lexi foundation) aimed at working for the freedom and betterment of the women.
Along with that, they built 5 “A Holistic School” across the Meik Islands within a span of 3 years.
Two outcomes of this movement includes :
1. Fear can make people change their attitudes
2.Jaw-Jaw is better than war-war.
Since then, Meik Islands have been an equal region for both men & women.
In essence, Rosella Razzo and Lexi Thurston got their happy endings. But still there are millions of girls still trapped in the patriarchal cage.
Escaping is one of the extreme measures when it comes to life. But sometimes it becomes the sole option to space out and establish oneself.
Gender discrimination, patriarchy is a deep and grave social issue. We, as the global citizens are duly responsible to contribute to end these social evils.
Patriarchy took a long time to become the normality of the world and it would take an equivalent time to subside as well.
“A single action Towards something is the first step to Improve it….”
Summary :
Patriarchy is a social system where men hold primary power and dominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege, and control of property. It often leads to the oppression and marginalization of women and non-binary individuals, perpetuating gender inequality and discrimination. Patriarchy manifests in various aspects of society, including politics, economics, culture, and family structures, and it has deep historical roots across different cultures worldwide. Efforts to challenge and dismantle patriarchy involve advocating for gender equality, challenging traditional gender roles, and promoting the empowerment of women and marginalized genders.
