On this day, the first successful transatlantic telegraph message was exchanged between Europe and North America. Before the invention of the telegraph, communication across the Atlantic depended mainly on ships. Messages could take several weeks to travel from one continent to another. The telegraph changed this by allowing information to be transmitted using electrical signals. 🔬 The Scientific Principle The telegraph worked by sending electrical pulses through a conducting wire. These electrical signals represented letters and numbers according to a coded system, most famously Morse code. For the transatlantic connection, a special submarine telegraph cable was laid across the Atlantic Ocean.
