जानकी को लगा था कि वो तूफ़ान मे हिचकोले खायेगी, इधर से उधर, उधर से इधर, आनंद के लहरों पर सवार हो कर झूमेगी, काम सुख की नाव पर बैठ कर वो दोनों साथ साथ तैरेंगे पर अपनी नाव अपनी डोंगी की खूँटे से बंधी गाँठ वो खोल पाती, उससे पहले ही तूफ़ान गुजर गया था और तुषार निढाल सा, शर्मिंदा, चुप जानकी की बगल में लेट गया था ।
आज तो उसे अपनी कमज़ोरी का पता चला, नहीं तो ऐसा पहली बार तो हुआ नहीं था । जानकी को लगा जैसे बिजली चली गई हो और ढूढने पर एक मोमबत्ती का टुकडा मिल जाये और जब तक आँखे उस मोमबत्ती की रौशनी में देखने लायक हो सके, मोमबत्ती का टुकडा जल कर ख़त्म हो जाये ।
उस दिन जानकी को वो अधूरापन कुछ ज़्यादा ही लगा था झिझकते हुए कह ही दिया था, आप बहुत जल्दी करते हो और तुषार और भी ज़्यादा शर्मिंदा हो गया था । उसकी शर्मिंदगी का कारण था उसकी कमज़ोरी, शराब पीना और तब तक पीना जब तक की होश ना खो जाये, उसके ऊपर खाना नहीं खाना और खाया भी तो तो अपौष्टिक खाया, शराब के साथ नमकीन ही खाकर पेट भर लिया, कारणों से उसका शरीर बेहद कमज़ोर हो गया था ।

पिता के आकस्मिक निधन से शिक्षा बीच में ही छूट गयी, जब मै सनातक स्तर के अंतिम वर्ष में था | सामने पूरा परिवार था, उग्र स्वभाव मेरे बहुत काम आया और पिता का पुरानी दिल्ली रेलवे स्टेशन पर पारसल बुकिंग का काम ना चाहते हुए भी मुझे अपनाना पड़ा | जहाँ चारों तरफ भ्रष्टाचार में डूबे हुए सरकारी और गैर सरकारी लोगो का जमावड़ा रहा है, जहाँ अपने दस रूपये के लाभ के लिए सरकार को हजार रुपयों का चूना लगाना एक आम बात है | दो दो संगठनों का दायित्व भी है मुझ पर, ऐसी परिस्तिथि में लिख पाना थोड़ा मुश्किल रहा है सीखने की चाह, सागर में उठते ज्वार भाटे सी रही है और इसी के चलते पहले शरीर सौष्ठव के शौक ने इस्पात के डमबल, प्लेट और रॉड आदि पकड़ा दिए और इस शौक ने मुझे बहुत कुछ दिया | मै ऋणी हूँ इस विधा का, इसके साथ ही, लोहे के डमबल के सौ वें अंश सा हल्का, और सौ गुना अधिक शक्ति शाली, पेन भी हाथ में आ गया और मन में उठते विचार, प्रतिक्रियायें कागज़ पर उतरती रही, साथ में उसी ज्वार भाटे में गिरते पड़ते, ज्योतिष, फोटोग्राफी, होमिओपैथी और आध्यात्मिक विषय में रुचि और सीखने की इच्छा से इन विधाओं को भी सीखता रहा, पढता रहा | दिल्ली श्री, भारत कुमार और अर्जुन श्री जैसी प्रतियोगिताओं में पुरस्कृत होने के साथ अपने वयवसाय को भी बढ़ाते हुए जीवन की विषमताओं से झूझता रहा हूँ और कड़ुए अनुभव भी पीता रहा हूँ | आज समय के साथ न बदल पाने का हठ सुख तो देता है एक आतंरिक सुख पर अर्थ नही, जो आज के परिवेश में सब कुछ होता है | पर मै असंतुष्ट नहीं, जीवन में विष नहीं तो नीलकंठ भी नहीं | सदा उलटी धारा में ही तैरने की चेष्टा रही है, लोगो के बनाये हुए बहुत से नियम मै अपना नहीं सका हूँ और शायद अब वो समझौता हो भी नहीं सकता, तैरते हुए जीवन के अंतिम छोर तक पहुँच ही गया हूँ | मै मैली गंगा में उलटे तैरते हुए आगे बढ़ता रहा हूँ और मैली गंगा और ज़्यादा मैली होती गयी है |

This story of an Indian woman , who plays the cards handed to her by Fate, to the best of her ability , like a proverbial Phoenix, is a spell binding read.
The manner in which she tries to adjust in a meaningless marriage to a man much older to her is touching. Yet she steers herself above the mundane life to study , and get higher education which enables her to get a job and provide a livelihood for her family , in absence of a husband who was there initially only for names sake and later disappeared.
The story captures the details of her excelling at her job, working tirelessly through the years as she brings up her children as a single mother .
Interspersed in this tale is also the sad story of her love, which she sacrificed initially for the sake of society and her parents wishes, and found it for a short while later in life…till the anticlimax …
As if the anticlimax was not enough surprise for the reader, one is shaken up by the way the story ends…in a heart rending manner..
The writer has captured the emotions of the protagonist very lucidly and sensitively, be it the unspoken anguish of being physically used and abused by a mechanical non loving husband , or the bubbling joy on being with her beloved for a
short while before lightning strikes their lives…
The book shall find an echo in the heart and soul of every Indian woman , who has struggled and toiled to be independent , and has risen above the shackles of society’s norms, to live life with self respect.
Congratulations to Mr Baugh for the sensitive portrayal of the emotions of women , and for the lucid storytelling style .
He saves his trump card for the heart rending finale…Destiny overrules All….and yet with his story he inspires us to play to the best of our ability the cards dealt to us by Providence…
